The UR women’s soccer team finished its five game road trip by defeating conference opponents Emory University and Carnegie Mellon University. The team went a combined 4-0-1 on the trip and improved its overall record to 13-1-3. The Yellowjackets remain in second place in the University Athletic Association.

On Oct. 27, the ‘Jackets traveled to play the Eagles. Over the past three years, Rochester is 2-1 in games against the Eagles, but each game was decided by only one goal and neither team scored more than one goal. Thus, this had the makings of a tightly contested game, and it was just that. UR came out with a vengance, scoring two goals in the first half. Senior Mary Walsh netted a goal at 17:45 and junior Darby Grant made it 2-0, scoring with just over three minutes left in the first half.

However, less than nine minutes into the second half, Emory’s Kerri Lydon put in a goal to make the score 2-1. Momentum appeared to shift in favor of the Eagles and, while Rochester had maintained a 5-1 advantage in first half shots, Emory closed the gap. Ultimately, UR was able to thwart all further scoring opportunities by Emory, ending in a 2-1 victory for the ‘Jackets. Junior goalie Molly Leitch made four saves in the winning effort.

Two days later, Rochester traveled back north to face Carnegie Mellon. In one of the few occasions all year, UR was outshot by its opponent 7-12. Although the ‘Jackets did not take many shots, they were effective in the ones they took. Senior Stephanie Klenotich scored her first goal of the season off of a corner kick by junior Laura Morrison (7:50). Senior Emily Urbanczyk scored a goal on a one-timer from senior Anne McMahon to improve the score to 2-0 (57:26). Less than three minutes later, Carnegie Mellon’s Sarah DeWath scored a goal off of a rebound to make the score 2-1, but that was the last goal of the game and the ‘Jackets earned a hard fought victory.

Since UR’s lone loss of the season to Washington University, the team has rebounded well by going undefeated on its arduous five game road trip. Rochester has one more regular season game, at home against Case Western Reserve University.
