The Yellowjackets faced off against the William Smith College Herons in a 1–0 match on Wednesday Sept. 23. In honor of Suicide Prevention Month, the Yellowjackets donned their new warmups in support of Mikayla’s Mission. The women proudly sported these warmups in hopes of spreading mental health awareness and decreasing the stigma around asking for help in times of mental health emergencies.
In the first half of the match, the women fought neck and neck for the first goal of the night. The Herons maintained control of the ball for a good majority of the half, but once the ’Jackets got a hold of it, there was no stopping them. In a clean pass from junior Forward Natalie Santangelo (10), Defense/Midfield Eileen Harvey (27) made the only goal of the night. Though the Herons made quick work of getting the ball back, they failed to score as the ’Jackets ended the first half with top-tier defense.
In the second half of the match, the Herons brought more spirit to the field. The Herons’ goalie, senior Antonia Goerke (1), seemed on top of her game, blocking numerous shots from Harvey, junior Defense Claudia Ferreira (30), and senior Forward Sydney Holmes (3). Still, the Yellowjackets fought through increasing tensions and physicality, and maintained their own excellent defense.
The Yellowjackets ended the match with a win, leaving their perfect 7–0 record untouched. The ’Jackets faced off against Misericordia University Sept 26 ending the match in a 1–1 stalemate. The ’Jackets play RIT Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. at Fauver Stadium.
