The women’s tennis team traveled in two different directions to finish off its fall season last weekend. Sophomore Lia Weiner who won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional tournament earlier this fall headed to Mobile, Ala. to play in the ITA National Championships, while the rest of the team went to Ithaca, N.Y. to play in the New York State Championships.

In ITA Nationals, Weiner faced the toughest competition in Division III and came up short on three occasions over the weekend.

After losing her first match, 7-6(1), 6-1, to Elizabeth Lewis of Chapman University on the first day of competition, Weiner dropped down to play in the consolation bracket, where she came up just short in her remaining two matches to finish in eighth place.

Meanwhile, in Ithaca, the rest of the ‘Jackets were also facing some tough competition. Freshman Alex Goodman advanced the farthest at the No. 1 singles position, ousting her first two opponents before dropping a match to Skidmore in the semifinals.

Three other UR players made it into the quarterfinals in singles competition freshmen Danielle Shreck and Jamie Bow and senior Kristen Shaw.

Each of the doubles teams made it into the second round of the tournament before losing to their opponents.

Overall, head coach Matt Nielsen has been very pleased with the team and how they have competed this fall.

‘I have been impressed with the work ethic and overall positive attitude of the team this fall,” Nielsen said. ‘They work well together as a team and are fun to coach.”
