The UR women’s tennis team battled against two tough opponents this past weekend. On Saturday, March 19, the ladies traveled to Middlebury College, and on Sunday, March 20, they faced Skidmore College. Both teams proved to be worthy adversaries in the fight for tennis court domination.
The Yellowjackets fought hard against a tough Middlebury team. Ranked No. 12 nationally, Middlebury swept No. 20 UR clean, 0-9.
At No. 1 singles, senior Lia Weiner, ranked No. 17 nationally, met her match in No. 16 junior Tori Aiello, falling by incredibly narrow margins of 6-7 (5), 5-7.
At No. 2 singles, UR sophomore Frances Tseng won the first game, 7-5 before dropping the next two, 2-6, 2-6. Likewise, junior Alexandra Goodman took the first game, 5-7, but couldn’t keep pace and sacrificed the final games, 2-6, 2-6. Junior Jamie Bow (1-6, 3-6), classmate Danielle Shreck (2-6, 3-6) and sophomore Hayley Brower (1-6, 3-6) also fell off in the No. 4-6 positions.
The Panthers proved victorious on the doubles court as well. Tseng and Goodman lost 2-8 at No. 1 doubles. Bow and Weiner suffered a similar 1-8 loss at No. 2 doubles, and Shreck and freshman Janice Zhao lost 2-8 at No. 3 doubles.
With fire in their eyes and a thirst for redemption, the women took on Skidmore the following day but ended up on the short end of a 4-5 result.
Ranked No. 19 nationally, the Thoroughbreds were no more pushovers than Middlebury. Weiner returned to form by winning her No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-4 and pairing with Bow to claim the No. 2 doubles match, 9-7, along with partner Jamie Bow. The other wins of the day came from No. 2 singles, in which Tseng triumphed, 6-2, 6-3, and from No. 5 singles, which featured Shreck’s victory, 6-1, 7-6 (4).
Unfortunately, the Yellowjackets struggled to come up with other wins. Tseng and Goodman failed to match the dominant play of Skidmore’s No. 1 doubles team, and fell 2-8. Zhao and Shreck suffered the same margin of defeat at No. 3 doubles. At No. 3 singles, Goodman couldn’t keep pace with her opposing Thoroughbred and lost 0-6, 2-6. After winning her first game, 7-5, Bow dropped games two and three by 0-6, 2-6 margins to hand over No. 4 singles. Brower couldn’t solve the opposition at No. 6 singles and lost 0-6, 1-6.
With the losses, UR falls to 7-3.They’ll see action this Saturday, March 26, during which the ‘Jackets will seek to put an end to the two-game losing streak.
