The men’s and women’s swim teams posted good times, but Ithaca College proved to be a dominant foe last Saturday as the teams wrapped up their regular season with dual losses, 168-63 and 152-91 respectively.

Ithaca has been a traditional challenge for the Yellowjackets. Last year, the men lost 148-89 and the women lost 140-85 at Ithaca.

However, some Yellowjackets did pull off victories and swam within range of personal records. Freshman Ann Richards placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:12.31. Junior Kristen Broderick was also victorious in the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:18.74.

On the men’s side of the deck, the 400-yard medley relay team of junior Mike Reinhardt, sophomores Mark Radloff, Mike McCormick and Ryan Montgomery has impressed all season long.

They ran away with a win in a time of 3:41. Montgomery later shined individually by placing first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 149.98.

“[Our expectations were to] swim our best and to push ourselves,” junior captain Christina DeVries said. “It was our last dual meet before [University Athletic Association] Championships, so we went out and gave it all we could.”

“I think we swam a lot better than our previous two meets, and we definitely improved from last year’s meet with [them],” DeVries said.

The women had just come off of a successful swim Wednesday, Jan. 24. The women out-swam William Smith College by a score of 129-84.

Junior Jacque Staple continued her hot streak in the 1000-yard freestyle with a win in 11:44.14. Junior Tiffany Siu was a triple winner, placing first individually in the 100-yard fly and the 400-yard IM while being part of the victorious 200-yard medley relay.

Broderick led the women in the 200-yard freestyle once again, this time clocking in at 2:06.71. She later grabbed another win in the 100-yard freestyle, with a time of 58.52. In diving, the women were also victorious, with senior Kelly Coulehan placing first with a score of 195.45. Sophomore Rebecca Wilner and senior Katie Stiefel followed in second and third with scores of 186.15 and 145.57 respectively.

For now, the teams are excited for the UAA Championships. This year, the event is held at Emory University Feb. 13 through Feb. 16.

“[We expect to] swim fast,” DeVries said. “All our training comes down to three days in Atlanta. We look for personal best times [and] UAAs is where all of the hard work pays off.”
