The women?s lacrosse team took their game to the turf in the first home game of the season Tuesday night, defeating SUNY Brockport 15-4.

The game was a long-awaited home opener for the Yellowjackets. In the past two weeks, seven games were cancelled due to inclement weather.

?It?s been a rough beginning of the season, but things are looking better from here from here on out,? junior co-captain Jenny Rogers said.

Despite having only two games under their belt, the Yellowjackets came off to a fast start scoring seconds into the first half. UR dominated the play throughout the half resulted in a commanding lead.

UR shut down SUNY Brockport, allowing them to only get two shots on net in the first half. With 18 shots on goal, the Yellowjacket offense was unstoppable. Taking a large lead, UR finished the half ahead 12-1.

?We started the game off strong and took charge of the tempo,? said coach Andrea Golden.

Because UR finished the first half with a strong lead, Golden took the opportunity to mix up the play and to make substitutions, allowing most of the players to see some game action.

Golden split up time in net allowing freshman goalie Stephanie Bristol to get some key game experience she faced seven shots in the second half.

?It was important to give exposure to both goalies,? Golden said.

?We are taking advantage of having an experienced senior goalie in Berke-Schlessel, and using her to help acclimate Bristol in net,? she said.

?Brockport wasn?t too much of a challenge for our team, and proved to be a great opportunity for a whole bunch of players to score some goals,? Rogers said.

Leading offensively for the Yellowjackets was freshman Katie Riegel with five goals. Freshman Sharon LaVaute scored three goals, junior Erika Bergstrom contributed two goals along with sophomore Delphine Robotham, while Rogers, junior Sarah Hansinger and junior Jessica Lerman picked up one goal apiece.

The Yellowjackets will hopefully be back on schedule with plenty of games to play.

This Friday, April 6th at 4 p.m, UR will face Rensselaer Polytechnic at Fauver Stadium.

RPI is currently undefeated for the season. In addition, RPI is the first UCAA team that the Yellowjackets will compete against this season.
