Welcome, or welcome back, to campus! While you were out enjoying your summer vacation, your humble Presentations Chief has been hard at work updating and standardizing the page templates for the print editions of the Campus Times. Although the pages look largely the same, our most eagle-eyed readers may notice a few key differences!
As Presentations Chief, I spend what can be upwards of 12 straight hours on print nights making sure our pages are just right: every text box within the right line, every line the right width, every word in the correct font and format. Now, as I approach the beginning of my senior year, I’m aware more than ever of the importance of consistency and legacy in the CT.
In addition to correcting small mistakes in our page templates, such as inconsistencies in text box alignments, my biggest priority for this update was preserving the characteristic look of the CT. The new page templates are heavily inspired by older editions of the CT (circa 2015), particularly the designs of key elements like bylines and pull quotes. Another main goal of this project was standardization. Now, for the first time in recent CT history, we have a standard layout for subheadings within articles. Additionally, I designed a resource page that our Presentations Staff can use to more easily access our most common page elements, making the layout process more efficient for our team. Our photo captions have also been redesigned to use space more efficiently — shoutout to CT alum Micah Bettenhausen ’25 and his endless supply of Chicago Tribunes mailed to my Campus Mail Center address for professional inspiration!
The new page templates make their debut in this Orientation edition of the CT.
