It was a rough week for the UR tennis teams, as both the men’s and the women’s teams lost all their matches. They now head toward University Athletic Association Championship play. Overall, the men’s team ended their regular spring season with a record of a disappointing 0-8, having to break in a host of new players. After losing their top player, junior Colleen Cross, who is studying abroad, the women’s team ended their regular season at 2-6.

The women’s team visited Skidmore College and came away with a 0-5 loss. The match featured a sweep of doubles by the Skidmore team. The first doubles team of junior Alexa Perry and freshman Vicky Wells lost, 4-8. The second doubles team lost, 1-8, and to complete the sweep, UR lost, 1-8, in the number three doubles position.

They didn’t fare any better in the singles matches either, as the women lost, 2-6, 1-6, in the number two spot and at the No. 4 position, Skidmore took the match with a 6-7, 0-6 score.

After their defeat at Skidmore, the women’s tennis team came home and endured the same result, a 0-9 loss to St. Lawrence. Perry also lost the No. 1 singles match, 3-6, 4-6.

Sophomore Brittany Bowman lost her match at the number two singles position, 4-6, 4-6. At the third singles position, Wells lost, 2-6, 3-6.

Following her, sophomore Kristen Shaw was defeated at the fourth singles spot, 1-6, 0-6. Freshman Michelle Desrosiers got bageled out at the fifth singles position, 0-6, 0-6. Sophomore Deborah Katz finished off the singles play by losing 2-6, 0-6.

The first doubles duo of Perry and Wells came close to a victory, but ultimately succumbed 8-9 (4). The team of Katz and Desrosiers lost in the second doubles spot, 2-8.

Bowman and Shaw finished off the doubles matches by falling to their St. Lawrence counterparts, 1-8.

The men’s team lost to Skidmore College, 0-6, on Saturday. Senior Mike Burger lost in the first singles position, 3-6, 2-6 .

Senior Jason Maher lost at the third singles, 1-6, 2-6.

Senior Mike Shepheard finished the singles play by losing at the fourth singles spot, 4-6, 3-6. The other three singles matches were called off.

The doubles matches came out with the same result as UR lost all three matches.

Freshman Adam Crosby and Bowman fell at the No. 1 doubles position, 7-9. Burger and Shepheard dropped the second doubles game 5-8. Finishing off the match, sophomore Tyler Socash and Maher lost their third doubles match 0-8.

Both the men and the women tennis teams finish off the spring season by participating at the UAA Championships at Case Western University. The women’s team concludes their season by playing on April 20-22 while the men compete on April 27-29.
