Four cars parked in UR lots were broken into on three separate occasions between Monday, March 5 and Tuesday, March 13.

The first incident occurred Monday, March 5 when UR Security dispatchers observed two individuals checking cars in Wilson North Lot at 12:45 a.m., Security Investigator Dan Lafferty said.

As the dispatcher was summoning officers, he saw one of the individuals breaking out the window of a parked car in the lot. As the officers arrived, the suspects ran into the cemetery.

Officers from UR and the Rochester Police Department searched the area, but did not find the suspects.

About an hour later, officers who noticed fresh tracks in the snow leading from the cemetery to Wilson Boulevard searched the area and found the suspects near the water authority building on Wilson Boulevard.

After they were identified by the dispatchers, the suspects admitted that they had broken into the car.

Criminal charges are currently pending.

The car?s owner had not been notified until recently because he was on spring break. When he returned and was told what happened, he said that he intends to file a report about the theft with RPD and planned to press criminal charges.

The second incident occurred between 11:30 p.m. Sunday, March 11 and 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, when someone broke into the cars of two students.

The cars were parked in the Nuclear Structure Research Lab Lot.

One of the cars had a broken window and the second was found with an open door, although there were no signs of forced entry and the owner said he had locked the car, Lafferty said.

Both owners said that there was nothing stolen from their cars. The owner of the car with the broken window was going to file a report with RPD at a later date. The damage to the window is estimated to be $90.

The final incident occurred at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, when officers found a car in University Park Lot with its trunk lid open.

Upon investigation, the officers found that the passenger side window had been smashed and the stereo appeared to have been stolen.

Officers notified the owner, an undergraduate student, who confirmed that his car stereo equipment and 100 compact discs were stolen from his car after 10 p.m. Monday, March 12.

The victim estimated that the stolen property was worth about $1,978 and that the damages to the car totaled approximately $650.

He planned to file a report with RPD at a later date.

Computer stolen from River Road

Ithaca College staff working in the classrooms at a River Road building reported to Security that someone stole a Dell computer tower from one of the rooms between Tuesday, March 6 and Thursday, March 8, Lafferty said.

Officers did not know if the classroom had been locked or not. They did not, however, discover any signs of forced entry.

There were few observers because traffic in the building was low due to inclement weather, Lafferty said.

Officers notified the Brighton Police Department and a report was filed.

We have all heard the expression, “the early bird catches the worm.” I, as an “early bird” myself, wake up as soon as the sun rises, looking forward to seeing the different birds singing and foraging during the daytime. But the excitement does not stop when the sun sets and the “early birds” return to rest; habitats high and low still teem with birdlife at night.  Read More
