A student exiting the Eastman School of Music annex building was robbed at gunpoint at 3:25 p.m. on Monday, according to UR Security Investigator Dan Lafferty.
The student was walking through Barrett alley when he was approached from behind by a group of four youths who attempted to engage the student in conversation. The student ignored them and tried to continue walking, but one of the suspects pulled out a handgun and demanded the student’s money.
After the student surrendered the money, the suspects fled and the student entered the Eastman facility main building where he alerted Security and the Rochester Police Department.
A police officer soon responded that he observed a group of youths that fit the victim’s descriptions along East Main Street. After a short chase, the suspects were apprehended and taken in, along with the student, for further investigation.
A gun was found on the suspects but it was not the one that had been used in the robbery; police later recovered the gun that was believed to be involved.
As of now police have charged one of the youths, aged 16, in connection with the incident. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Youth skaters ordered to vacate premises
Officers responded to reports of two youths skateboarding in the area between Rush Rhees Library and the Frederick Douglass Building on Friday at 1 p.m.
The youths, who had reportedly been yelling profanities, fled the area upon the arrival of the officers, according to Lafferty. They were stopped on Alumni Road near Wilson Boulevard and later denied yelling profanities.
The youths admitted to being 15 and 17 years old and having no affiliation with the University.They were told not to return to the property.
Altercation over cellular phone results in hospital visit
An argument over a cell phone in Slater Hall resulted in an injury on Saturday night, according to Lafferty.
A group of males entered a suite in Slater at 2:40 p.m. and confronted the occupants. Members of the group believed that one or more of the suite occupants had used a lost cell phone to make inappropriate calls to members of the cell phone owner’s family.
After the group entered the suite, a verbal altercation commenced. After some time, a member of the group pushed one of the suite occupants backward into a large balcony window. The victim suffered a laceration when the window shattered and a piece of glass fell on his head.
The group left and occupants of the suite took the injured student to Strong Memorial Hospital Emergency Department for evaluation and care. The phone was recovered in the suite and returned to its owner.
The victim has not filed a police report and is evaluating his options.
