The women’s lacrosse team faced off on their home turf against the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles on March 23. The cold, dreary and snowy weather for the game produced miserable conditions for the players and fans – only 75 people attended the game – alike. The Yellowjackets took the lead first with an unassisted goal from freshman Heidi Davies at 3:52 into the game. SUNY Brockport responded with a goal of its own to even the score at one at 6:41. A lull in scoring was followed by another goal at 14:49 to give the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead.Senior Rachael Holtzberg and junior Rachel Hawley scored once each within a period of one minute. Hawley’s goal was assisted by junior Elizabeth Sack. The score after 17 minutes of play was 3-2 in favor of UR. The first half ended with the Yellowjackets ahead of SUNY Brockport by a score of 4-3. UR had 11 shots in the first half while SUNY Brockport trailed by three with eight. Senior Stephanie Bristol recorded two saves.Six minutes into the second half, the Golden Eagles scored a goal, making the game an even 5-5.The Yellowjackets started a seven-point scoring streak that began with a goal from junior Emily Riegel, unassisted, at 9:46. Between the 10th and 18th minutes of the second half, two goals were scored by Davies and Reigel and one goal each was scored by Sack, Hawley and sophomore Lisa Arnoff. At the end of this streak, UR had pulled away from SUNY Brockport permanently with a score of 12-5.The game ended with a final score of 15-10, with the Yellowjackets emerging victorious. The women’s lacrosse record improves to 1-1 after this win against SUNY Brockport. UR finished the game with a total of 33 shots and limited SUNY Brockport to just 20. Davies led the team in goals with three and tied for most shots, at six, with Riegel. Bristol made five saves for UR on 20 shots.
