Dear Editors:

I am writing to you to request permission to include the following titles published in your paper in a forthcoming collection of American college student writings:

“Dressed to Impress: Men’s Spring Fashion” Mansi Desai (4/5/2001)”Dressed to Impress: Women’s Spring Fashion” Mansi Desai (4/5/2001)”Taking Responsibility” Todd Hildebrandt (4/5/2001)

These writings have been selected by me and my colleagues/co-editors from among the hundreds of thousands of titles published in the hundreds of college student newspapers across the country. About a hundred of such writings and essays submitted by students and recommended by their professors will represent the voices of today’s American college students, expressed freely and eloquently, confronting a spectrum of subjects and issues, from academic to social to political to global. The purpose of putting together this collection, tentatively titled Candid Voices: Essays by American College Students (to be published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press), is to promote communication and understanding between college students (and other educated individuals with abilities to read in English) in China and their counterparts, such as the readers of your newspaper, in the United States. Such an understanding, my colleagues/co-editors and I believe, is paramount to a stable and constructive relationship between two of the most important nations in the world.

I’d appreciate an early reply from you and want to thank you in advance for your support to this worthy project.

If you have any questions with regards to this request, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shouhua QiEnglish DepartmentWestern Connecticut State University181 White StreetDanbury, CT 06810Phone: 203-837-9048Email: qis@vax.wcsu.edu
