It’s that time of year again, as the Association for Development of Interest in the Indian Subcontinent gears up to host its annual cultural fair ? the South Asian Expo.
This year’s event will be held Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. in the May Room of Wilson Commons and will feature several booths depicting many nuances of South Asian culture.
South Asian Expo is an annual event where ADITI members have the opportunity to showcase their vocal, instrumental and dance talents to the university community. Each year ADITI also invites other multicultural groups to perform at Expo in order to compare and contrast others’ traditions with those of South Asia.
“This year the focus is on making everything more interactive. especially the booths, with more props, games and multimedia experiences to truly give visitors a first-hand feel for South Asian culture,” ADITI President and senior Sudhir Shenoy said.
Among the new additions to Expo this year are caricaturists who will draw likenesses of visitors with a South Asian style and theme. There will also be South Asian snacks that will be served by India Caf throughout the afternoon. All the old favorites that we have grown accustomed to ? such as the UR Bhangra Dance Team and the amazing Mehndi artistry return to Expo.
“Expo is a really great event because there are so many different things going on. From the booths to the Bhangra, it’s all absolutely amazing,” junior Maryam Jahdi said.
The finale of Saturday’s Expo will be Xplosion, an after-party co-sponsored by ADITI, Sigma Delta Tau, Spanish And Latino Student’s Association and the Pride Network. Xplosion will be held at the Community Living Center in the Quad Annex from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
