The UR golf team was unable to pick up any ground this weekend at the Nike Ocean City Classic hosted by McDaniel College. The team backpedaled a bit on day two to finish fifth place of the tournaments 14 entrants.

UR came out of the gate on day one with consistent rounds of golf, with three Yellowjackets breaking 80 strokes on the day. Freshmen Jon Pecor led the way shooting a three over of 75. Sophomore Stephen Goodridge and senior Chris Wuest fired dueling 76s for the day as well. Junior classmates Joe Derrigo Jr and Robert Shermen chipped in matching 84s.

The team’s collective score of 311 strokes on the day tied with McDaniel and St. John Fisher College for fourth place, a shot behind third place Carnagie Mellon University.

The team was unable to make a run on day two as the only two players managed to break 80 for the round. Goodridge and Pecor shot a 75 and a 76 respectively giving each a two day total of 150, which result in a tie for third place individually.

Wuest followed his first round by carding a dissappointing 83 on Sunday, while Derrigo and Sherman both improved on day two but still fired rounds in the 80s with an 82 and 80 respectively.

UR’s two-day total of 622 placed it two back of fourth place Carnagie Mellon and three shy of third place Washington and Jefferson.

The Ocean City Classic marked the end of a very successful fall campaign for UR. The team at one point was ranked as high as 12th in the country and led by Stephen Goodrigde, who followed his highly successful freshmen season with three University Athletic Association Player of the Week honors and one Liberty League Player of the Week Honor, and upcoming freshmen John Pecor, who was named Freshmen Player of Week in the Liberty League once. But not to be out done was the consistent scoring of senior leader Chris Wuest and junior Joe Derrigo Jr and Robert Sherman. There season will be put on hold until the Peter Rossin Tournament this April. Allard can be reached at dallard@campustimes.org.

As recently as the early 2010s, it was standard practice for surgeons to provide 30 to 40 or more opioid pills for common, minimally invasive procedures. Most of these pills, however, would remain untouched, left over in the patient’s medical cabinet or kitchen pantries for potential misuse. A team of researchers led by URMC’s Dr. Jacob Moalem set out to reduce these opioid overprescriptions. Read More
