Starting Monday, Nov. 12, certain parts of the Pit will open at 8:30 a.m., as opposed to the current opening time of 10:30 a.m. According to Director of Dining and Auxiliary Services Cam Schauf, the change is in direct response to student requests.

“We have been responding to student requests all along. There has been a desire to have bagels and cereals and things like that,” Schauf said.

Earlier this semester, Dining Services brought breakfast foods back to the Pit in response to complaints by students who discovered that it was missing after returning from summer break. Schauf also mentioned that the Roc City Grill once again stocks bacon, thanks to popular demand.

Schauf said that the students’ next expressed a strong desire for a convenient place to eat in the morning on the south side of the River Campus.

Not all of the facilities in the Pit will open early, however. Only the service area – where the coffee and juices are located – and the toaster will open at 8:30 a.m., while all of the hot counters will still open at 10:30 a.m.

Student reaction was generally positive.

“A lot of classes start at 10 a.m., so it would be better if [the Pit] would open early,” freshman Stefanie Greene said.

However, some students are still of the opinion that Dining Services should continue to tweak their hours.

“I don’t care about the breakfast hours, but I think the Pit should stay open until 2 a.m.,” sophomore Josh Cohen said.
