The Yellowjackets struggled on both sides of the ball in Courage Bowl VII at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester on Saturday, Sept. 17, falling to the perennial national contender St. John Fisher Cardinals, 52-3.

Headlined by linebacker Nick LoBrutto — who finished the game with eight tackles and a sack — the sharp, physical Cardinals’ defense refused to allow a single UR touchdown throughout the game.

St. John Fisher’s offense was perhaps even more brutal, as Cardinals’ quarterback Ryan Kramer passed for three touchdowns and FuQuan Borum rushed for another to compile a 28-3 lead entering the half. St. John Fisher totaled 238 yards passing, 147 rushing.

That said, the Yellowjackets didn’t go completely unheard. UR passed for 107 yards throughout the game, 50 of which went to junior wide receiver Thomas Hayes. Yellowjackets’ junior quarterback Braezen Subick, who completed 11 of 19 passes for 90 yards and an interception, connected with Hayes five times throughout the game. Two of Hayes’ receptions contributed the team’s second-quarter scoring drive, which ended with a field goal. From the Cardinals’ 24-yard line, junior kicker AlexAntonucci cut St. John Fisher’s lead to 7-3 with six minutes to play in the first half.

On the defensive side, junior inside linebacker Brendan Pidgeon, who had two interceptions in last week’s victory over Case Western Reserve University, led UR with 15 tackles. Outside sophomore linebackers Tony Ortega and Zach Cicero had 13 and 10 tackles, respectively. Spencer Miller tallied a six-yard sack of Kramer for the Yellowjackets.
