The Rochester Softball team traveled to Ithaca College for a double header at Kostrinsky Field on Sunday, April 3. Rochester bats  managed the lone run between the teams in the first game, edging out Ithaca 1-0. Unfortunately, Ithaca was able to split the difference by taking a 5-4 victory in the second game.

In the first game, the Yellowjackets had four total hits. Junior Samantha Melvin, who scored the game’s only run, hit a double to left field in the second inning. She then advanced to third base after freshman Megan Hennessy’s bunt. Junior Katie McLean’s single down the first base line drove in Melvin.

UR had an ideal chance to add to its lead in the seventh inning. Senior Lindsay Macalusohit a leadoff double to right field. Later in the inning, a bunt by junior Wagner brought Macaluso to third base. The Yellowjackets were unable to bring Wagner home though, as Ithaca pitcher, Alison Greaney, threw two strikeouts to end the inning.

A big part of Rochester’s success in the first game was due to pitcher Madeline Skellie, a sophomore. Skellie pitched a shutout and only allowed Ithaca three hits and three walk, putting up six strike outs in the balance. Skellie kept her composure during the sixth and seventh innings when tying runs were at second base. In both cases, runners were left stranded at second base. Skellie’s win brought her to a total of five wins for the season and two losses.

In the second game, Rochester was winning 2-1 by the top of the third inning. Rochester’s defense struggled in the fourth inning when the Bombers scored two unearned runs to make the score 5-3.

Rochester was almost able to come back for the victory in the seventh inning. Nicole Goldman, a sophomore, scored a run to make the score 5-4. With the bases loaded and two outs, Hennessy came up to bat but grounded out.

Rochester now sits at 10-8 on the season and hosts SUNY Geneseo on Thursday, April 7.
