The third time proved to be the charm for the Yellowjackets as they faced the Wells College Express in their third consecutive game away from the comforts of Fauver Stadium. Close losses to Union College and No. 18 Skidmore College were avenged by Rochester’s blowout win on Saturday. Over the course of 70 minutes of play, the Yellowjackets outshot the Express 17-5 and outscored them 5-1. All five Rochester goals were unassisted. The Yellowjackets were unstoppable in the first half of the game, totaling 11 shots and 10 penalty corners. Sophomores Krista Butler, Mary DiMatteo and Celinda Fletcher each netted a goal in the first 35 minutes of play, with Butler’s goal coming less than two minutes into the game. DiMatteo and Fletcher scored with 17:26 and 3:33 remaining, respectively. Defensively, freshman goalie Rachel Cahan faced no shots on goal.Freshman Robyn Levy played in the goal for the second half and continued to hold the Express scoreless for 15 minutes of play. She faced the most offensive pressure from her opponents when they attempted to capitalize on three penalty corners, already trailing 3-0. Out of five shots on goal, Levy made three saves and let only one in as Wells College sophomore Nicole Maryjanowski managed to tap one in off a penalty corner. Rochester added more insurance goals in the second half as well, with Butler scoring her second goal of the day 10:44 into the half. After Wells’ goal, sophomore Emily Zametkin foiled the Express’ plans for a comeback with a goal of her own 30 seconds later. Although no Rochester goals were scored off assists, Fletcher was essential in setting up two of five goals in addition to the one she put in herself.Senior captain Erin Charnow, sophomore Kristy Johnson and freshmen Kari Plewniak and Kim Snyder also tallied up shots on goal in addition to the five scored on Express sophomore Ali Formicola. Charnow, Johnson and Plewniak each had one shot, while Snyder led the team with six shots, just above DiMatteo’s five. With the win, Rochester improved to an 8-6 record and Wells College fell to 4-5 overall. The Yellowjackets will return home to face Ithaca College this week, then pack their bags again to face Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.Anderson can be reached at janderson@campustimes.org.
