An electrical outlet located in Wilson Commons emitted a burning odor and smoke on Sunday, Feb. 24 at approximately 11:30 a.m., according to UR Investigator Daniel Lafferty.
Facilities staff looked into the cause of the odor and attributed it to old wiring and a loose connection. Once Rochester Fire Department gave Facilities the all-clear to commence repairs, staff worked on fixing the outlet.
There were no injuries from the incident and only the switch was damaged.
Wallet and laptop disappear in library
According to Lafferty, a backpack containing a student’s wallet and laptop was stolen after he had left his area in the Carlson Library computer section. The student claimed to have left his things momentarily in order to make a phone call and found it missing upon his return.
The incident occured sometime between 7:30 and 7:50 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 22.
The student will later file a police report.
Possessions stolen in Goergen
A student reported that a sweater, ID card and keys were stolen in Goergen Athletic Center on Sunday, Feb. 24.
According to Lafferty, the student left the sweater and its accompanying items on a bench in the basketball arena area at around 12:33 p.m.
Once the student returned, everything was gone.
The items have not yet turned up and there has not been any police report filed.
Unidentified person loiters in Meliora
An unidentified individual asked a staff member to let him into the library in Meliora Hall on Monday, Feb. 25.
The individual approached the staff member at 5:45 p.m., according to Lafferty, and left after he was asked whether he was affiliated with a program within the building.
The person was not found in a subsequent search of the surrounding areas after the incident. Staff intends to alert Security if the individual is seen again.
Unpleasant surprise follows performance
A student reported her wallet stolen from Room 106 at the Eastman Theatre on Monday, Feb. 25 at around 9:21 p.m., according to Lafferty.
She had left her possessions in the room while she performed at Eastman School of Music. She cancelled her credit cards and did not file a police report.
Freelance writer finds home in library
An individual claiming to be a freelance writer, who did not have any affiliation with the University, was escorted from Rush Rhees Library at 4:05 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
The individual was using one of the computers and received a warning, according to Lafferty.
