The ‘Jackets tied with New York University for second at the McDaniel Spring Invitational over the weekend. Campus Times Archives.

Whether individually or as a group, the UR golf team was a picture of steady rhythm this past weekend when the Yellowjackets travelled to The Bridges (located in Abbottstown, Pa.) to take part in the McDaniel Spring Invitational. Through tirelessly consistent play from the tournament’s opening round to the very last putt on the evening of Sunday, March 27, the yellow and blue took home a share of third place. No. 24 St. John Fisher College was the only member of the 14-team field to best UR.

The ‘Jackets combined for 316 strokes on Saturday, March  26  and mirrored their performance almost to the stroke with a 315 the following Sunday. Their total of 631 strokes left them six strokes behind St. John Fisher and in a dead-even tie with New York University.

As has become the norm, freshman Nick Palladino led the way for UR. His five-over 77 on Sunday, combined with a 74 on Saturday, March 26, earned him a tie for fourth place individually. Palladino’s total of 151 was just one stroke off the winning mark, which was shared by three players.

UR’s two to four men all played startlingly consistent golf, as the three men combined to shoot a 241 on Sunday — just one stroke off the 242 they shot the day before.

More than anyone, junior Mike Chudacoff embodied the team’s consistency-of-performance mentality, shooting a 78 on both Saturday and Sunday to end up with a sum of 156 — good enough for ninth place. Sophomore Marc Youngentob followed suit with respective day scores of 79 and 80, leaving him in 16th place with 159 strokes. Senior Chris Driscoll maintained focus and played a balanced weekend of golf with a Saturday score of 85 and an 83 on Sunday.

Freshman Rafael Baez was the lone exception to the weekend’s trend. Baez took 90 strokes on Saturday to dig himself into a low ranking on the leader boards but turned his game around on Sunday when he improved by 10 strokes to total 170 and climb into a share of 46th place.

UR returns to competition this Sunday, April 3, when they plan to take part in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Invitational in Hershey, Pa.
