On Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Fauver Stadium, UR lacrosse began a cat-and-mouse game with SUNY Geneseo. The Blue Knights of Geneseo scored, and the ‘Jackets caught up multiple times throughout the game, until a two-goal lead by the Knights in overtime left UR with no time left to recover. The final score was 12-15.

“I don’t think anything was missing,” junior middie Abby Woodward said. “They had shots that went in when ours didn’t.”

Geneseo held a five-goal lead until junior attack Mary Kate Hannan put one on the board for UR off of a free position shot with 12:29 left in the first half. After Hannan’s first goal, UR picked up momentum. The Yellowjackets got the next three scores to pull within one with four minutes remaining in the first half.

Sophomore attack Amanda Case scored the second goal for UR, taking the ball up by herself from a pass out of the defense by junior Erica Gelb and putting it past Geneseo’s junior goalie Hannah McKee.

The next goal was scored by freshman attack Allyson Hogan, who picked up a dropped ground ball from Geneseo’s defense inside the 12-yard line. With a fake right and a shot high left, freshman attack Chelsea Audin notched the next one for UR. Geneseo responded with one more goal to make it 5-6 at halftime.

Woodward tied the game at 22:56 in the second half, but senior Mimi Hong’s clean checks in the defense combined with junior goalie Leslie Dube’s remarkable saves were not enough to stop Geneseo’s three-goal advance with 12 minutes left.

The ‘Jackets caught up with the Knights with goals by sophomore attacker Danielle Mondro and Hogan and junior attack Melissa Schoenberger.

With five minutes left in the game, things got heated. UR tied the score three more times to stay within reach of a win. Woodward tied the game 10-10 at 4:43, but Geneseo scored to take the lead again.

Woodward scored again, only to be answered again by Geneseo. With 1:20 left to play, junior middie Lindsay Dakin notched the final goal of regulation to tie the score at 12-12.

The ‘Jackets faced the Blue Knights in two mandatory three-minute overtimes but were unable to hold off the offensive surge of Geneseo, who scored three more goals in the extra periods.

During the game, junior defender Megan Jenkins won four draws, while Mondro and Dakin each won three. Junior middie Marlena Fisher picked up a team-high four ground balls.

The Yellowjackets are 1-4 in the regular season. They begin their Liberty League games this weekend away at Clarkson University and St. Lawrence University.
