The UR baseball team swept two games from St. Lawrence University yesterday, 10-0 and 4-3. Its record for the season is now 6-0 in Liberty League and 10-3 overall. St. Lawrence fell to 1-2 in Liberty League and 5-7 overall following the doubleheader.

Junior southpaw Blair Veenema started the first game and was dominant. He cruised through the first six innings without allowing a hit. He ended up pitching all seven innings, allowing one hit while walking four and striking out eight. Veenema has two wins on the season.

Offensively, the team was kept quiet by St. Lawrence’s pitcher, Troy Lassial, for four innings. However, they broke through in the fifth. Sophomore infielder Nathan Stein walked. Freshman outfielder Matt Francis laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Stein to second. Sophomore infielder Blayne Fuke walked, and sophomore outfielder Andy Cannon doubled, plating the first run.

Fuke then scored on a passed ball. Senior infielder Ed Kahovec was walked and stole second. Senior infielder Jay Jay Vanderstyne drove him in with a sacrifice fly to center field. Junior catcher Ryan Sullivan doubled in the fourth run. Junior first baseman Dan Brien drove in the fifth run with a double, and senior outfielder Dave Kloc finished the barrage with an RBI single.

The scoring continued for the Yellowjackets in the sixth as they added on four runs. Francis doubled and then scored on an error.

Sullivan drove in Cannon with a single, followed by Brien finishing off all scoring by singling in both Kahovec and Sullivan. The team finished with nine hits for the game, showing some great offensive balance as five different players picked up an RBI to go along with the dominant pitching performance.

The second game of the double-header was slightly closer, but the ‘Jackets prevailed with a 4-3 victory.

Senior right-hander Peter McEneaney was cruising along before the fourth inning, when he was roughd up, leaving after one run was scored and exiting the game after being responsible for five hits and three runs in three and two-thirds innings. He walked three while striking out four. Junior Paul Toland walked three batters before sophomore Luke Brocks ,along with freshman Charles Chanatry, kept the Saints off the scoreboard and allowed the Yellowjackets to grab the lead. Senior John Fishback then came in and shut the door, saving his fourth game of the season to finish off the sweep.

Offensively, the team was sharp from the very beginning as the team scored two quick runs in the first inning. After Cannon singled, Kahovec singled and Sullivan was hit by a pitch to load the bases.Vanderstyne was hit by a pitch to drive in the first run. Kloc continued his productive day by hitting a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Kahovec. In the third inning, Brien tripled and scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 3-0.

The Saints didn’t lay down this time as they pushed across three runs of their own via a double and an RBI single and three walks that were all issued by Toland.

The ‘Jackets were not going to let this game slip away, however, and they answered in the sixth inning.

Fuke doubled with two outs and, after a pitching change, Cannon drove him in as the winning run with an RBI single.

The team hosts Keuka College today at 2 p.m. followed by a pair of games at home against Union College on Friday April 5 at 2 p.m. and Saturday, April 6 at noon.
