An officer patrolling campus on Nov. 22 discovered a natural gas leak in the kitchen of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity house, according to UR Security Investigator Dan Lafferty. Windows were opened to ventilate the area and the Rochester Fire Department was notified. The gas to the stove was shut off and the cause for the leak was found to be a malfunctioning valve in the stove. No injuries were sustained, according to Lafferty.Security officer witnesses car theft A student called security at 12:55 p.m. on Saturday to report that an unidentified person was walking around Hill Court parking lot looking into cars, according to Lafferty. An officer responded and found an individual similar in description inside a vehicle parked outside Chambers Hall. The officer approached the car and saw the person attempting to start the vehicle with a screwdriver inserted into the steering column, according to UR Security. The person refused to open the locked car door or speak with the officer. They got the car started and began backing up. The officer had to move out of the way, but was able to obtain the license plate number as the car drove away, according to Lafferty. The suspect was last observed heading down Wilson Boulevard toward Ford Street. A short time later, a student called security and reported that her vehicle was stolen from in front of Chambers.Laptop stolen from Gavett Hall An unidentified suspect broke out a window of a door on the second floor of Gavett Hall and gained access to the lab, stealing a laptop computer sometime between Friday and Saturday evening, according to UR Security. Although a cabinet was found open, nothing else appeared to be missing from the lab. The Rochester Police Department responded and processed the scene.Bicycle stolen from Baush & LombAn undergraduate reported that an unidentified suspect stole his bike, which had been secured via chain and lock to an exterior handrail outside of Bausch and Lomb on Monday. No police report has been filed at the present time.Unsuccessful break-in attemptedAn officer patrolling campus found that an unidentified suspect had tried to pry open a door to a classroom on the fourth floor of Dewey Hall sometime prior to 5:49 p.m. on Sunday, according to Lafferty. Officers checked the area and concluded that everything was in order.
