CT Eats: John’s Tex Mex falls short

After a couple bites, the freshness of both the plain, cold fish and the sauce along with the also cold and fresh tomato and lettuce became a bit too plain. Everything was just a bit cold, soft, and bland when combined.

Now, this may be the only review in which you’ll read me say I enjoyed the dryness of the meat. The chunks of lamb were sturdy and a bit dried out, but this just allowed them to soak up more of that great sauce and to fall apart at the hands of it, giving the meat almost the consistency of a brisket.

I absolutely adored my honey milk tea. The honey flavor was spot on, strong, and easily identifiable without being overly sweet — I could easily drink the whole thing pleasantly without feeling that awful numbing, tongue-drying buildup of sweetness.

One nice adjustment was making the individual wheels of negimaki perfectly bite-sized. Being able to eat the negimaki in one bite allowed for all the flavors to burst in your mouth at once.

The restaurant had a very welcoming aesthetic. Warm colors, plants, and tons of natural light made for a friendly, comfortable, inviting atmosphere — perfect for an impending food coma.

Just like Dino, Sticky Lips aims to capture the Americana look of old-school barbecue houses off the open road, like the ones in some motorcycle road trip movie. The difference is that Sticky Lips has way brighter lighting and a less-crowded feel.

Also, they have a fish tank at both the Chili and Henrietta locations near the entrances of the restaurants, which I find morbidly hilarious, considering it’s a sushi place. Those poor guys are watching their brethren get eaten. I wonder if fish can shed tears in water...

CT Eats: Naantastic, the flawed Chipotle of Indian food

The options are also pretty much a carbon copy of Chipotle’s options, but with Indian food staples as the content instead of Mexican ones. That means you’ve got an option of choosing between naan tacos, a food bowl, or a naan wrap, filled with a protein base of lamb, chicken, cheese, or beans.
