The rain began eight minutes before game time, but nothing could stop the Yellowjackets from defeating the Ithaca College Bombers 5-1 on Wednesday. Sophomore forward Revay Wilson was the star of the game with three goals. Sophomore Kristy Johnson scored the first goal 13:37 into the game with assists by freshman Kari Plewniak and senior captain Erin Charnow. Wilson followed seven minutes later with a goal at 14:10 remaining, again aided by an assist from Plewniak. UR was as relentless as the rain and the remaining four goals of the game were scored in the second half. The Bombers began the second half with their only goal of the game, followed only two minutes later with a breakaway Wilson goal assisted by sophomore captain Mary DiMatteo. Wilson provided an encore of her own performance only 90 seconds later, assisted by a cross from sophomore Celinda Fletcher. Charnow and sophomore Heidi Davies aided sophomore Krista Butler with the last goal of the game 29:12 into the half. All told, Rochester outshot Ithaca 20-9 and freshman goalie Rachel Cahan totaled five saves compared to Ithaca’s seven.Friday’s game brought little rain but a chilly 4-2 loss at the hands of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Red Hawks. Rochester scored the first and last goals of the game but failed to bring home the win as the Red Hawks peppered the middle with four of their own. Charnow, who was chosen by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association to play in the 2004 NFHCA Division III North South Senior All-Star game, began quickly with an unassisted goal only six minutes into the game. A scoring dry spell of over 50 minutes ensued, only to be broken by four Rensselaer goals netted over a 10-minute time period. Butler scored the last of the Rochester goals at 67:12, but there was not enough time to stage a Yellowjacket comeback and Rochester fell to a 9-7 overall record. Cahan had four saves to match the four Red Hawk goals.Again on the road on Saturday, Rochester’s game at Prentiss Field against Vassar College was an intense, 1-0 win for the Yellowjackets. Throughout the 70 minutes of play, the Brewers drilled more shots at goal and had five times as many penalty corners as UR, but the Yellowjackets refused to lose. Wilson scored for the win, this time netting the shot on a breakaway, one-on-one face-off with the Brewer’s freshman goalie. Cahan had nine saves to Vassar’s eight. The Yellowjackets improved to a 10-7 overall record and 3-4 in the Liberty League.
