The UR men’s tennis team traveled to Maine on April 3 and 4 to play Bates College, Brandeis University and Bowdoin College.The Yellowjackets lost 5-2 to No. 15 Bates at their indoor facility on Saturday. Senior Colin Ryan won at No. 2 singles in three sets. Junior Avinash Reddy also won a three-set match at No. 4 singles. In a tough match, senior Dan Williford lost at No. 1 singles to the No. 13 player in the nation. Seniors Williford and Ryan lost in No. 1 doubles, while junior Brian Shenker and sophomore Eric Prince won at No. 3 doubles. UR narrowly lost the doubles point in a hard-fought tiebreaker battle at No. 2 doubles, where Reddy and junior Partha Bhattacharya lost with a close 9-8 decision. “After losing the doubles point by literally two points, the match was extremely even throughout,” Ryan said. “We definitely had our chances to win that match, we just didn’t capitalize on them.”The Yellowjackets returned for a 5-0 victory over Brandeis later Saturday evening. Bhattacharya came back from behind to win at No. 3 singles. UR won the doubles point against Brandeis. After UR won at No. 1 through No. 4 singles, the No. 5 and No. 6 matches were stopped because the match was decided.UR traveled to Bowdoin, losing 6-1 against the No. 13 team on Sunday. At No. 2 singles, Williford lost in a close match, 7-5, 6-4. Freshman Mike Lee extended his record to 14-2, after producing UR’s only win at the No. 6 singles spot.”We have the talent to beat a team like Bowdoin, but everybody on the team needs to find a way to pull out our tough matches,” Ryan said.The men’s next match is at Wesleyan College on April 10.This past weekend, the UR women’s tennis team also traveled to Maine to play Bates and Colby.The Yellowjackets lost to Bates 7-2 on Saturday. Senior Tara Pahoohi won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2. At No. 1 singles, senior Joanna Toke played a hard fought match, winning the first set, 6-3, but falling in the second set and tiebreaker, 3-6, 8-10. Freshman Maya Gurme played well in her first set at No. 6 singles, eventually losing, 6-4, 6-1.UR played Colby at Bowdoin college on Sunday, losing all matches 9-0.
