The golf team used a slightly adjusted lineup to earn a third-place finish at the District II Mid Atlantic Golf Invitational at the Hershey Golf Club in Hershey, Pa. this weekend. It marked the team’s second straight top five finish.Coach Richard Johnson used the different lineup to better gauge his players’ strengths for future tournaments. “Because of [the] weather and tight schedules we haven’t had an opportunity to play for spots,” Johnson said via e-mail before the tournament. The results this weekend did little to change either the team’s or their coach’s high expectations.After an opening score of 317, UR found itself fifth in the tournament’s field of 15 teams. The Yellowjackets used a second day total of 315, the second best score of the day behind Allegheny College – the tournament champions – to finish with an aggregate two-day total of 632. UR’s total tied it with Gettysburg College in third place, only three strokes behind the second-place Diplomats of Franklin and Marshall College. Individually, UR was led by freshman Robert Sherman and senior Dave Masters. The duo finished in a three-way tie for fifth place and carded a total of 155, only five shots behind the tournament’s medalist, Ben Rathfon of Allegheny.Freshman Colin Quillinan, inserted into the teams five-man rotation for this weekend, finished with a 161. UR’s scoring was rounded out by senior Jason Bronstein and freshman Patrick Shanahan who shot 162 and 164 respectfully.The team is off for two weeks before heading the UAA Championships held at Smoke Rise Golf and Country Club in Stone Mountain, Ga.
