The field hockey team started their season on Sept. 4 with a 4-0 win over SUNY Oswego.

Rochester was definitely the more aggressive team of the two, outshooting Oswego 28-6 and holding a 24-4 shots-on-goal advantage.

UR held a 2-0 halftime lead. Sophomore Mary DiMatteo scored two second-half goals to ice the game for the Yellowjackets.

Senior Erin Charnow and sophomore Krista Butler each scored a goal.

Sophomore Kristy Johnson had two assists. Freshman Kim Snyder and sophomore Celinda Fletcher had one assist each.

The Yellowjackets earned 15 penalty corners on the day.

DiMatteo struck at 47:55 and 64:52. Johnson set up the first, Snyder the second.

Freshman Rachel Cahan saved three shot attempts to earn the shutout.

In their next matchup on Sept. 8, the Yellowjackets fell at home 2-0 to SUNY Cortland.

Cortland scored goals 1:43 apart early in the second half to break a scoreless tie from halftime and take command of the game.

Cahan had seven saves for the Yellowjackets. Sophomore Heidi Davies had two defensive saves for the Yellowjackets.

Rochester is 1-1. Cortland, which went to the Final Four last season, is 2-0.

The Yellowjackets will host Nazareth College and Utica College next week before traveling to Elmira College for their second road game of the season.
