The UR women’s lacrosse team is known for its poise in the face of adversity. The Yellowjackets finished up their four game home stand this past weekend as they fell to visiting Skidmore College and Union College, falling to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League. Despite strong play from freshman midfielder Lindsay Dakin, the Yellowjackets have now lost three in a row and are in fifth place in the Liberty League.
The Yellowjackets took on second place Skidmore College in game one over the weekend. The Thoroughbreds trailed early in the first half before going on a 4-0 run over six minute span to take a 6-3 lead at halftime.
Dakin found the back of the net early in the second half for UR, but Skidmore went on a 6-0 run over the next 14 minutes to seal the win. The Yellowjackets were able to take advantage of free position shots to pull within six, but in the end UR wasn’t able to capitalize on the 25 Skidmore turnovers and fell to the visiting Thoroughbreds 13-7. Dakin and junior defender Laura Giusto led the Yellowjackets with two goals apiece.
Looking to bounce back from the loss, the Yellowjackets took on 15th ranked Union College on Saturday. The Dutchwomen dominated the first half and went into the break with a 6-3 lead. The Yellowjackets were never able to get their footing and committed 24 turnovers in the game. Entering the second half, the Dutchwomen came out swinging, pounding in four goals in the first 11 minutes of the half. But a ray of hope did break the clouds for the Yellowjackets, as Dakin literally took over the game, scoring the next four goals either out of the free position or unassisted. But a Union goal late in the game capped the 11-7 win for Union. Giusto and junior attacker Christina Montano had one goal apiece for Yellowjackets.
On Tuesday, the Yellowjackets traveled to confront William Smith College in hopes to end their losing streak. Despite out-shooting the Herons and being plus 11 in the turnover category, a gritty first half lead was washed away by an 8-0 Heron run in the middle of the second half. UR was dominating in the first half, forcing 17 Heron turnovers as Woodward, Dakin and junior midfielder Alanna Tievsky had three goals apiece. But it was not enough as the Herons hit key shot after key shot to take the lead in the second half. The Yellowjackets didn’t give up a single free position shot all game, but fell to the home team 13-9.
The Yellowjackets will take on first place Hamilton College as they attempt to close out the second half of their season strong.
