The Yellowjackets took a harsh loss against the Case Western Reserve University Spartans, ending the game at a 20–38 deficit.
The first quarter set the tone for the rest of the game; the Spartans took a 14-point lead six minutes in on the back of touchdowns by senior Jake Otto (#4) and junior Will Stack (#9). All hope was not yet lost however, as only 15 seconds later sophomore Jett Genovese (#6) completed a touchdown for the ’Jackets first six points.
Despite that glimmer of hope, the ’Jackets remained scoreless in the second quarter, while the Spartans scored a field goal and another touchdown, bringing their game total to 24–6 going into halftime.
As the game restarted in the 3rd quarter, the ’Jackets had another tough 15 minutes of play. After the Spartans added another touchdown to their game, completed by junior Andy Kavcic (#1), the ’Jackets were down by 25 points.
Going into the fourth and final quarter, the ’Jackets very quickly had a completed touchdown by senior Braydon Felsinger (#2), which narrowed the gap slightly to 31–12. Only five minutes later though, graduate student Sergio Beltran (#10) completed another touchdown to re-widen the gap. Three minutes later, the ’Jackets ran their last touchdown of the game and tallied out another six points, bringing the final score to 38-20, for a Yellowjacket loss.
Though the focus of the game was on the season opener, at halftime Felsinger was awarded the Lysle ‘Spike’ Garnish Scholar Athletes Award, one of 10 recipients. He was chosen for his performance on the field and how he leads his teammates in games, as well as his classroom performance as a mechanical engineer.
The next game for the Yellowjackets will be at home on Sept. 12 against the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs.
