UR’s men’s soccer team tied Emory University at Emory’s Woodruff P.E. Center in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, Nov. 9. 

Both teams had early shots on goal with Emory’s goalie. Sophomore Sharan Dodwani (#1) picking up two saves in the game’s first 11 minutes. 

The first 45 minutes were mostly uneventful, however, with UR recording five unsuccessful shots compared to Emory’s three. UR controlled possession of the ball with their five corner kicks, two of which happened in the 36th and 37th minutes following a blocked shot from UR. 

UR opened the second half quickly with a goal in the first minute of play from sophomore Milos Bisenic (#7), his fifth of the season. Graduate student Kamal Ibrahim (#9) picked up the assist on the play. Shortly thereafter, Emory picked up two yellow cards for excessively physical play.

In the 75th minute, UR goalie, graduate student Santino Lupico-Tonda (#0), saved a shot from Emory graduate student Ryan Nichols (#23).

Emory attempted three more unsuccessful shots in the next eight minutes, the last of which was saved by Lupica-Tondo. In the 86th minute, UR picked up a yellow card of their own.

Finally, after a wide shot, Emory scored in the 88th minute when graduate student Ryan Winkler (#11) scored his tenth goal of the season, with assists coming from graduate student Grant McCarthy (#15) and first-year Phillip Head (#32). 

With less than two minutes to take the lead, UR was unable to score again, ending the game in a 1-1 tie. 

In the second half, Emory outshot UR eight to five, including their game-tying goal.

Overall, Emory attempted one more shot than UR (11 to 10) and also led in saves (three to two). UR had six corner kicks to Emory’s one. 

With their record standing at 9-4-4, UR will hope to advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament next week.
