As the season came to a close, the 4×200-meter relay and 4×400-meter relay teams each set a new school record during the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships at Boston University March 3.
The men?s indoor track team stormed to a tenth place finish overall, out of the 57 teams competing at the meet.
The team managed to break a total of three school records ? two relays and one solo.
It was a big day for the UR relay teams.
The 4×200 team, consisting of seniors Andy Locke and Jon Coyles, junior Justin Lamontagne, and sophomore Brian Strand-berg, finished the record setting event at 1 minute, 31 seconds.
The 4×400 team consisted of senior Sam Albert and junior Damien Leonard in addition to Coyles and Lamontagne who ran a record time of 3:21.92.
The 4×800 team (freshman Alex Voetsch, sophomore Justin Panarese, juniors Scott Rhodes and Andy MacMillan) placed fifth with a time of 8:00.57.
Coach John Izzo was extremely proud of his teams. ?Our team rose to the occasion at this meet,? he said.
Outside of the relays, the men placed in several other events as well.
In addition to helping the 4×400 team, Albert placed third in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:06.72, also breaking another school record in that event.
?Sam [Albert] was definitely the top performer of the day for us,? Izzo said.
Locke added times of 6.79 seconds and 23.64 seconds in the 55-meter dash and 200-meter dash respectively.
Coyles finished the 400-meter dash with an impressive time of 51.61 seconds, while Lamontagne completed the 55-meter high hurdles in 8.19 seconds.
Macmillan also ran in the 800-meter run, finishing at a time of 1:58.26.
Izzo said ?indoor track is a sport that makes an athlete run and think to the best of his ability, as well as have a little luck.?
Luck or not, the Yellowjackets ran their hearts out as they gained their place in school history.
In the field, junior Ayaz Abdulla placed fifth in the triple jump at 13.47 meters and also jumped to 6.03 meters in the long jump.
Teammate and freshman Greg Dusek jumped to 12.97 meters and 5.90 meters in both events respectively.
As the indoor winter track season came to a close, UR finished in an impressive manner with three new records to hold above its head.
?The ECAC meet was a great way to spring into the outdoor season,? Izzo said.
