The football team will greet a new assistant coach for the upcoming season.

Lewis Acquarulo was recently named the defensive coordinator for the Yellowjackets, replacing Peter Gallagher who resigned in February to be head coach at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania. Acquarulo comes to UR from the University of Pennsylvania.

The football program at UR has undergone a major transformation under head coach Mark Kreydt, leading up to the 6-4 winning season in 2000.

Acquarulo hopes to continue with the progress Kreydt and others have made so far with the team.

Fortunately, Acquarulo will have a lot of returning talent in the upcoming season.

UR&s defense is full of all-stars such as junior linebacker Brian Ko-walski and freshman John Savage. They were named Academic All-American and Rookie of the Year by all three athletic conferences: the University Collegiate Athletic Association, University Athletic Association and the Eastern College Athletic Conference.

Acquarulo&s experience as coach for the past two seasons at Div. I U-Penn includes focus on developing the outside linebackers and coordinating special teams.

He has also worked with the defense at Div. II&s Southern Connecticut State College, following his first coaching position at his alma mater Union College.

Aside from coaching experience, Acquarulo also developed insight when he was a starter for Union at nose guard and defensive tackle for three seasons.

He was a four-year varsity player and helped Union capture three post-season playoff bids. He was also a member of the the 1990 ECAC North Championship.

Acquarulo will be with the Yellowjackets as they open their season in 2001 with three straight home games, starting with St. John Fisher College Sept. 8.
