UR now has five confirmed cases of COVID-19, while Monroe County has reported 246 confirmed cases, six of which have resulted in deaths.

The sixth death occurred on Sunday, according to the Monroe County Department of Public Health.

According to UR, three students and two staff members have self-reported to University Health Service as testing positive for COVID-19.  Those numbers do not include anybody at the UR Medical Center (URMC), UR’s coronavirus update website said.  None of the five who self-reported are still on campus.

URMC is fighting the COVID-19  outbreak on several fronts. Treatment trials testing drug Remdesivir’s ability to combat COVID-19 began at URMC last week, and URMC has recently worked with the county and the Rochester Regional Health system on a plan to increase patient capacity and possibly create a field hospital.

“This plan will give us the option of creating more than 2,000 additional beds should we experience a surge in patients beyond our current capacity,” Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said in a press release.

23 of the 246 cases in the county were confirmed between 4 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. Monday.

76 cases of COVID-19 in Monroe County have been resolved, Public Health said. 33 of the confirmed coronavirus patients are hospitalized, and 22 of them are in the intensive care unit. 490 people in the county have been placed under mandatory quarantine and isolation.

This creates a dilemma. If we only mandate what is easy for companies to implement, emissions keep rising. If we pretend everything can be decarbonized quickly, climate policy collapses under its obvious failures. A serious approach has to accept two tenets at once: we need full decarbonization everywhere that it is possible, and  we need honest promises from sectors where it is not. Read More
