The men?s soccer team suffered its first defeat of the year this past Sunday as they fell 2-1 in an overtime heartbreaker to University Athletic Association nemesis, Carnegie Mellon University.

After going down 1-0 in the first half, UR battled back in the second period to equalize the score 1-1. Junior forward Jacques Appleby scored off a rebound from senior forward and captain Bill Miller to send the game into overtime. The Tartans scored early in the first overtime period for the 2-1 win.

?The result was disappointing, but over the course of 90 minutes, we played very well,? said head coach Chris Apple.

?We had a couple of lapses and lost focus for a few moments here and there, and those mistakes are disappointing. The game could have gone either way, but they got the break.?

UR?s loss to Carnegie followed a decisive win against the Spartans of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland on Friday. Appleby led UR to the win with two goals. Appleby began his three-goal weekend early in the second half when he knocked in a rebound from Jeff Parrinello?s shot. He struck again at 37:42, finishing off a pass from sophomore midfielder Nick Wheeler for his seventh goal of the season.

Rochester earned its fourth consecutive shutout of the season against Case backed by four saves from sophomore goalkeeper Brain Minehan and one from freshman goalkeeper Peter Francis.

After splitting the weekend, the Yellowjackets, now 3-1-0 in the UAA and is 8-1-1 overall, are now tied with CMU, now 3-1-0 UAA and 7-1-0 overall, for second place in the UAA behind Washington University.

Apple described the loss as a ?bump in the road that we will put behind us quickly.? He remains confident in his team?s chances at winning the title and the NCAA tournament bid that goes with it.

After hosting the Rochester Institute of Technology this Tuesday at 7 p.m., UR will have a full week to prepare for their next contest against Washington University in St. Louis at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 at Fauver Stadium.
