Sophomore catcher Harleigh Kaczegowicz of UR Softball was recently named the Liberty League Performer of the Week and had a game-winning hit in the sixth inning against Union College.

Why did you decide to play softball in college?

I decided to play softball in college because I always so fascinated with watching the girls play on TV when I was little and always had the dream to do the same. I have been playing softball since I was about five and started playing travel ball when I was 10. I basically don’t l know a life without softball and couldn’t imagine life without it in college. Although I didn’t make it to play on TV, I wouldn’t change a thing.

What impact do your teammates have on your performance in games?

My teammates help me to push myself and do better. When I get frustrated, I always remind myself that I am part of a team and can’t let my frustrations impact them–it helps me to shake things off quicker. Also, I love looking over at my team after I get a good hit and seeing how happy they are.

Do you have any pre-game rituals?

I don’t do anything special. I just listen to some country music.

What is your favorite aspect of softball and why?

I definitely love the action in the sport and how unpredictable it is. I like the feeling of being in all the action as a catcher and there is definitely no better feeling than making a great play or getting a great hit. I love the rush of adrenaline I get when I play and how I can escape from reality from a little bit while playing.

What has been your most memorable moment as a softball player here at UR?

My most memorable moment so far as a softball player here at UR was definitely during this current season when I hit my first collegiate home run against Skidmore. I’ve been waiting for the day it would happen and it finally did. The best part of it was that it put us ahead of our opponents and that my parents were there to see it, too.

What other extracurriculars do you participate in at UR?

I really don’t have that much time to participate in extracurriculars, but in my free time I like going to the gym, watching movies, or going out to dinner with my friends.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Surprisingly I really don’t have a favorite athlete. I have never really followed any sports or athletes.

If you could eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

If I had to eat only one food for the rest of my life I would probably choose donuts, especially if it was donuts from this donut shop called Donut Crazy back at home. They have so many different flavors and toppings I would never get bored.

I had hoped that Lanthimos would make more substantial changes than swapping the gender of the central character and adding a dramatic musical score to make this story his own.
