Contrary to the hopes and prayers of those in upstate New York, the Buffalo Bills have fallen to the hands of their rivals Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Jan. 26. With a final score of 32–29, the Chiefs paved their way to a chance of a consecutive trio of Super Bowls, a feat that has never been completed in NFL history. With this win, the Chiefs have now stopped the Bills’ dream of reaching the Super Bowl for the fourth time in the last five years.

Kansas City controlled the first quarter of the AFC Championship, stopping the Bills on their first drive then marching down the field to gain the lead 7–0. The Bills turned around quickly with a following drive that resulted in a 53-yard field goal by Bills kicker Tyler Bass.

Mahomes led the Kansas City offense back into Buffalo territory on a series of plays that seemed it would inevitably lead to a TD — but the Bills defense came up big, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver at their own 28-yard line.

On a Chiefs offensive drive late into the first half, Mahomes threw a deep pass 26 yards downfield to Kansas City’s rookie Xavier Worthy, who was ultimately named leading receiver of the game. Both Worthy and Bills safety Cole Bishop went up for the ball, both of them getting a hand on it as they hit the ground. Buffalo’s head coach challenged the call on the field, which was a completion, as the replay revealed the ball making contact with the ground. However, the ruling was upheld, and this controversial call allowed for the Chiefs to complete their drive with a gain of seven points.

The first half ended with both teams scoring a pair of touchdowns. As a result, the AFC Championship went into the half with a score of 21–16 Kansas City.

The second half began with a Kansas City punt, giving MVP candidate Josh Allen a chance to even the score. A strong effort from the Bills offense with the help of All-Pro running back James Cook put them up 22–21, but a failed 2-point conversion kept their lead at a narrow one point. Buffalo’s defense then stopped the Chiefs and forced a punt, but despite that positive sign, their next drive would be detrimental to their efforts to win.

With a chance to add a cushion to their one-point lead, the Bills advanced into Kansas City territory. After three attempts at a first down, Buffalo had the football at 4th & 1 at the KC 41. Allen attempted to power through the D-line with the use of his signature “Tush Push,” but referees spotted the ball short of the first down marker. This official decision was yet another controversial ruling in favor of the Chiefs, as even NFL rules analyst Gene Steratore stated “I felt like he gained it by about a third of the football.” Therefore, the Bills turned the football over on downs, and Kansas City went the other way and took the lead, 29–22.

Josh Allen and Buffalo then took nine plays to cover 70 yards, with a 4th & Goal conversion pass short right to Curtis Samuel for the touchdown. This tied the score at 29 with just over six minutes remaining in the game. The Bills defense was able to hold Mahomes and the Chiefs to a field goal, but were not able to match it, and the AFC Championship concluded with a score of 32–29 Kansas City.

And so the Buffalo Bills and their Mafia go yet another year without a Super Bowl appearance. In the last five years, the Bills have come out victorious in four regular season games against the Chiefs, yet they cannot seem to finish the job when it counts in the playoffs.

Earlier in the day, the Philadelphia Eagles put a stop to the Cinderella run of the Washington Commanders, winning by a score of 55–23. Although the scoreline seemed close for most of the game, the Eagles pulled away in the fourth quarter by scoring 21 points to Washington’s none.

This high scoring game had an action-packed first half with Washington putting up points on four out of their six offensive drives and Philly scoring four touchdowns on five offensive drives. While the Eagles were consistently putting up seven points, the Commanders had to resort multiple times to field goals, resulting in the halftime scoreline showing 27–15 in favor of Philadelphia.

The second half started off with a pair of punts and a pair of touchdowns from both of these divisional rivals, bringing the score to 34-23 Philadelphia. However, after the Commanders offense fumbled at midfield with less than a minute left in the third quarter, the game tipped tremendously in favor of the Eagles and they began to pull away.

A 22-yard carry by MVP candidate running-back Saquon Barkley put the Eagles at the Washington one yard line. A humorous sequence of encroachment penalties on Washington’s Frankie Luvu would follow as Luvu dove over both the defensive and offensive lines in an attempt to time it perfectly to tackle Eagles Quarterback Jalen Hurts. After his second failed attempt and an additional encroachment by Commanders lineman Jonathan Allen, the referees announced a warning stating if they did it again, the Eagles would simply be awarded a touchdown. Regardless, on the next snap, Hurts ran in the football to complete the score.

Two more back-to-back touchdowns by two different Eagles — Barkley and Will Shipley — split the game open and cemented the victory. With a final score of 55–23, the Philadelphia Eagles will move on to New Orleans, Louisiana in an attempt to prevent Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs from making history.

Super Bowl LIX will essentially be a rematch of the 2023 Super Bowl in which Kansas City came out on top 38–35. Vegas has the Chiefs as the betting favorites with a -1.5 to Philly’s +1.5.
