Rochester celebrates
Jewish Book Festival

The Jewish Community Center Lane Dworkin Jewish Book Festival kicked off on Sunday, Nov. 1, celebrating its 17th year.

The Festival, hosted by the JCC of Greater Rochester on Edgewood Avenue in Brighton, is held across the country in celebration of Jewish Book Month. Although a majority of the author’s are Jewish, some of the authors aren’t but they write books relating to Judaism.

Several authors are scheduled to present their books at the festival up until its closing date on Nov. 8.

Rochester ranked third
greenest school district

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Rochester City School District ranked third in a nationwide list of 20 school districts that utilize renewable energy resources. The number one spot went to Austin Independent School District in Texas.

According to EPA, 18 percent, or 9.9 million kilowatts, of the City School District’s electricity is generated from wind turbines.

Renewable energy sources include solar, wind and low-impact hydropower. Combined, the 20 school districts buy 113 million kilowatts-per-hour from renewable energy sources.

That’s the equivalent of the amount of electricity used by 11,000 American family households in a year.
