The squash team was up against some tough competition this past weekend at Yale University. Overall, it was a positive weekend as the Yellowjackets picked up their first win of the season.

In the final match Sunday, UR took no prisoners against University of California-Berkley. They had a tough series but came out on top 5-4. Helping the Yellowjackets to their first win of the season were freshman David Appleman, senior Josh White, senior Asad Abdulla, senior Josh Vinocour and freshman Jay Ledbetter.

They started off the day with a tough 4-5 loss to the Camels of Connecticut College.

Senior Josh White won his match in decisive fashion. Vinocour, Ledbetter and sophomore Allen Fitzsimmons also picked up victories for the Yellowjackets.

?It was our first hard-fought match for the young players,? Vinocour said. ?It was overall a great showing by the team.?

Despite the victory, the Yellowjackets faced tough competition last Saturday.

They started off their series of matches against the host team. Yale proved to be a dominant force as it swept the younger Yellow-jackets. UR dropped the match 0-9 to the Bulldogs.

The Naval Academy took on UR in the second match of the day. Despite taking one match away from Navy, UR fell short of a victory. However, Abdulla won the tight five game match for UR?s lone victory in the series.

In the final match of Saturday, UR took on the Bates College Bobcats. Once again the Yellowjackets were overpowered and lost the match 0-9.

The squash team will be home for two of its last three regular season matches against Wesleyan College Saturday, Feb. 3. and Hamilton College Saturday, Feb. 10.
