The men?s golf team returned home gloriously from the Western Maryland College Spring Invitation last weekend. During the two-day match, the Yellowjackets defrosted from the Rochester freeze and competed their way to a second-place finish, behind the favorite Wesley College.

UR wrapped up the 36-hole tournament with 633 points. The lowest number of strokes totaled for the team?s combined score.

Freshman Jason Bronstein and sophomores Scott Clyde and Mike Quijano each shot 158 strokes each while sophomore John Semeniak put in 159. The team?s fine performance was more than what coach Rich Johnson could have hoped for, considering how the team has only been able to practice indoors due to the snow.

?It was hard to expect anything because we have not played outside since our spring training in Hilton Head, S.C.,? Johnson said. ?So I?m generally very pleased with our all-around performance.?

Despite the excellent performance, Johnson believes there is ?room for improvement for the upcoming season.? He also hopes with the warmer weather the team will be able to practice outdoors and it will be able to work on its game a lot more effectively.

The next challenge the golf team will face will be District II?s ?Cross- creek Apparel? Golf Classic at Hershey, Penn. from April 15-16. This competition has been much anticipated by the Yellowjackets, as they prepare to face some of the best teams in the region.

?We are definitely keeping an eye on the defending champions Allegheny University and strong competitors like Wesley College and the College of New Jersey,? Johnson said.?We?ll have to beat those three teams in order to have a shot at the championship.?
