The women’s indoor track and field team continues to get stronger as the season rolls on. With two relays finishing in the top four and a number of other individuals scoring significant points, the Yellowjackets finished a respectable fourth out of eight teams on Sat. at the St. Lawrence University Invitational.
“Finishing fourth was awesome,” freshman Joey Flyer said. ” Brockport and St. Lawrence were powerhouses, but, on the whole, the team was really, really strong.”
Not only did UR score in 12 of 18 possible events, but they also had two more individuals and one more relay team qualify for the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships. They also had one individual champion.
“Everyone’s getting really close to ECAC times, which is awesome,” Flyer said.
Senior Jessica VanBinsbergen was first in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:53.18. Freshman Lauren Jewett also scored, placing fifth with a time of 12:01.83.
VanBinsbergen also ran the anchor leg on the Yellowjackets’ distance medley relay team, which placed third with a time of 12:57.82 – a time that qualified them for the ECAC championships. The other relay runners were senior Kate Pohlman, Flyer and freshman Kate Medford. Each of the relay runners managed to score points in another event, as well.
Pohlman was fifth in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:27.06 and Medford finished sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 65.21. Flyer ran the third leg of the 4×200-meter relay with junior Kristy Johnson and freshmen Jamie Landry and Latoya Dunbar. They clocked in fourth with a time of 1:54.41. Landry also placed fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.10.
“In the future, we’d like to bring the relay times up to ECACs times,” Flyer said. “We want to perfect our performances in the 4×400 and the 4×800.”
Sophomore Michelle Andrews finished third in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.87, which qualified her for the ECAC championships. Junior Whitney Silkworth finished sixth in this event with a time of 9.53.
In field events, senior Cynthia Gurecki placed fourth in the weight throw, throwing 13.16 meters-good for the ECAC championships, and junior Kate Odian placed sixth in this event. Silkworth was fifth in the high jump, jumping 1.42 meters, and freshman Elaina Stover cleared 2.78 meters in the pole vault competition to finish fourth.
This Sat., the Yellowjackets head to Syracuse University to participate in the Syracuse Invitational.
