A Rochester resident was apprehended by UR Security on Monday after accosting a Medical Center employee in her office, according to UR Security Investigator Dan Lafferty.
The suspect, 18-year-old Devon Capers, initially approached a Medical Center employee and asked her for directions.
A few minutes later, the same person entered the victim’s office, closed the door and demanded her possessions.
The victim screamed for help, after which the suspect ran from the scene.
A UR Security officer who had been in the area gave chase to the man after hearing calls for help from Medical Center staff.
The officer had been in the area returning previously stolen property.
As the officer chased the suspect, additional calls to UR Security were made.
Capers was caught by pursuing UR Security, staff and faculty after a short chase.
No weapons were found on or in the area of the suspect. The victim, upon examination, was shaken but not injured.
One UR Security officer was injured and treated at the Medical Center, subsequently returning to work.
Subsequent investigation revealed that Capers had been involved in three other thefts in the Medical Center.
Capers was taken by the Rochester Police Department and arrestedon charges of robbery, larceny, assault and drug possession.
An undergraduate student’s laptop was stolen from Rush Rhees’s Periodical Reading Room, according to Lafferty.
The theft occured on Tuesday sometime around 3:15 p.m., according to the victim.
The laptop had been left on top of a library table unattended while the student left.
Upon the student’s return, the laptop was missing.
A police report was to be filed via 311 at a later date.
Residenial Life and the Dean of Students’ office are investigating a note left under a DeKiewiet Tower door last week, according to Lafferty.
The note was described as being alarming in nature.
The student whose door the note was found under assumed that the note had been placed there by another student with whom he “has had some issues,” according to Lafferty. Investigation of the note is ongoing.
The YMCA on East Avenue was the scene of an “alarming” event last Thursday as an Eastman School of Music student conducted a conversation with a stranger, according to UR Security.
The student had been working out at the YMCA when a person came up to her and made small talk, asking where she lived and what her phone number was.
The student responded to a question or two before the stranger wandered away.Information provided by UR Security.
