Some of the best athletes, coaches and friends of the UR Department of Athletics and Recreation will be inducted into the Hall of Fame over Meliora Weekend.

As part of the homecoming weekend festivities the Hall of Fame inductees will be introduced at halftime of the football game against U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday.

The inductees include cross country and track and field standouts Douglas Abeles ’81, Jessica Lyon Densmore ’92 and long time coach Timothy Hale. Both Abeles and Densmore were extremely successful in their respective National Collegiate Athletic Association DIII Championships. Hale prospered as a coach, winning 15 New York State Championships and 10 straight first place finishes.

The list also includes two football inductees Paul Macielak ’72 and Jerrold Winter ’59. Macielak was a solid force as an offensive tackle whereas Winter played multiple defensive positions and proved to be a ruthless attacker.

Patricia Dowell ’78 of the late ’70s women’s basketball team and John “Spike” Wilson ’51 of the baseball program were also given the honor. Dowell was a force inside, who led the Yellowjackets to a 16-3 season in 1987. Wilson pitched and coached in his four year college career for the baseball team before joining the United States Naval Forces.

Rounding out the 2010 Hall of Fame inductees are swimmer Kevin Uy ’87, ’93 and long time friend Lois “Inky” Watts ’51. Uy was dominant on the swimming team, which won four straight Upstate New York Championships. Watts helped over the years with recruiting and other alumni programs, which has helped the Athletics program grow tremendously.

The Athletics program will be holding an introduction ceremony on Friday, Oct. 15th in the Robert Goergen Fieldhouse.

Manrique is a member of the class of 2012.
