A police investigation on South Plymouth Avenue, which the University notified campus residents of on Monday, January 21 at approximately 8:15 p.m., turned out to be a “false call,” according to Rochester police investigators.

The incident was located on the 1100 block of South Plymouth Ave., north of Riverview apartments. Alert UR, the University’s notification system, advised recipients to “stay away from [the] area” and to “remain sheltered.”

No one is in custody or under arrest for the incident.

Delores Forest and Jeffrey Bordeaux, Sr., the parents of Jeffrey Bordeaux Jr., the UR student who was fatally stabbed in January 2011, have filed a $24 million lawsuit against UR, Delta Upsilon (DU), the fraternity which hosted the party at which the stabbing occurred and former UR student Daren Venable, who stabbed Bordeaux, Jr. but found not guilty of second-degree murder in March 2011, on behalf of their son’s estate, according to the Democrat and Chronicle.

The civil suit accuses UR and DU of negligence for not taking the necessary steps that could have decreased the possibility of violent action. A July 2011 report that reviewed the incident claimed that the University’s response was appropriate and stayed true to UR’s established protocol concerning emergencies. It also gave 23 recommendations for how the University could prevent such problems in the future.

Students, faculty and staff at the University, including the UR Medical Center, are being targeted by a dramatically increasing number of phishing and spam attacks. They are receiving emails that are fabricated to look like they originated from University Information Technology (IT), Information Systems Division, the help desk or other support locations.

Some accounts have been compromised by users who have responded to the phishing. One of the most fraudulent emails redirects users to an external website at which the users enter their username and password. Users are cautioned that these phony websites look like valid UR sites.

If you think you may have been a victim of this email phishing scam, you are asked to change your password immediately by going to UR’s myIdentity portal or by calling the Information Technology Help Desk at 585-275-2000.

Users are asked to be cautious of suspicious emails and to report spam or phishing emails immediately. These emails should be sent as an attachment to the University IT Help Desk at UnivITHelp@Rochester.edu or Abuse@Rochester.edu.
