UR, DU, Venable sued by Bordeaux family

Delores Forest and Jeffrey Bordeaux, Sr., the parents of Jeffrey Bordeaux Jr., the UR student who was fatally stabbed in January 2011, have filed a $24 million lawsuit against UR, Delta Upsilon (DU), the fraternity which hosted the party at which the stabbing occurred and former UR student Daren Venable, who stabbed Bordeaux, Jr. but found not guilty of second-degree murder in March 2011, on behalf of their son’s estate, according to the Democrat and Chronicle.

The civil suit accuses UR and DU of negligence for not taking the necessary steps that could have decreased the possibility of violent action. A July 2011 report that reviewed the incident claimed that the University’s response was appropriate and stayed true to UR’s established protocol concerning emergencies. It also gave 23 recommendations for how the University could prevent such problems in the future.
