Conference recognizes nonviolence

Attendees of UR's first Conference on Nonviolence did not wear flowers in their hair, nor did they march to any salt works or plan boycotts. But they did conduct a lengthy, and at times heated, discussion on the nature and history of nonviolence.

For six and a half hours in the Hawkins-Carlson Room in Rush Rhees Library on Saturday, both UR students and area professors discussed the current state of nonviolence in the world, historical movements and hopes for the future, while also seeking to define the notion of violence itself.

On Tuesday night, the College Diversity Roundtable released preliminary results on its campus climate assessment survey.
The United States has employed public financing of presidential elections since the 1970s. Although the specific regulations of the U.S. system of public financing are complicated, the concept behind public financing is simple.
When we sought office last spring, we categorized all the work we wanted student government to complete for the academic year. Yes, it fell under the pillars of advocacy, communication and expansion, but there was more. We organized our goals: first, we outlined projects that we could accomplish this year and, second, we created projects that we could lay groundwork for but would not be able to see come to fruition under our leadership.

The presence of Sexual Assault Awareness Week on campus has had a sobering effect for many of us at UR. Unfortunately, as college students, most of us have friends or acquaintances who have been subject to sexual assault or harassment; just as many of us may bear the guilt of perpetrating an unwanted sexual act.

I would like to respond to the opinions article, "China prepares to sweep gold in Relays of Shame." I express my disappointment and resentment of the author, Mark Fleming, who wrote such a distorted, insulting article about the 2008 Olympic Torch Relay. First, Fleming said, "The Chinese government has an abysmal record for human rights, does not respect free speech.

I was very disappointed with the Campus Times' coverage of the mayor's speech.

The article implied that the event was a school-sponsored event, which was unfortunate considering the hard work and long hours that Christopher Hancock, in addition to the Urban Exploring Club and Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity, who actually sponsored the event, put into it.

Rochester's winter months seem to have finally ended. The skirts, sandals and shorts have reappeared, and we have had more than a few beautiful days. How can one be sure that spring is here to stay and that it will not snow tomorrow, as it did on Sunday? One need only look past the Frisbee players who have been outside for weeks, even months, to see the sport (or competitive athletic activity) that signifies the official arrival of spring at UR: Campus golf.

My residents (Gates 4) pulled a prank last year on the other hall by lining their hallway with plastic cups filled with water.

Our morning routines have generally gone unchanged from elementary school to college - wake up, watch some Pokémon, eat cereal. However, our entry into college inspired our imaginations to new directions when contemplating our cereal boxes. While sitting in our dorm rooms recovering from a tough weekend out, bleary eyes directed at Lucky, the Lucky Charms mascot, on his box, all we can think of is: would we want to party with him? Who would be the best cereal mascots to party with? And who would trash our party, ruin the night and force us away from their cereal forever? This is what we found.

When I told people that I was going to be studying Chinese in Beijing this spring, many people nodded understandingly, reconfirming briefly some form of "That'll be great for business" or "big future," while others, completely overwhelmed by the concept of society on the other side of the world, simply responded, "Wow, sounds like an adventure"; still, others just stared at me blankly and asked, "Why?"

I won't lie and say that I didn't ask myself this question many times leading up to my departure and on the plane (and even now, occasionally as I'm packed onto a bus or subway car and stared at for the entire ride).

Can you all believe that this is the last column of the semester? Believe it or not, this is the final Life, Love… Sport (Playoff Fever Edition) of the school year. I'm just as sad as you are. Since it's the middle of April, it can only mean that playoffs are around the corner in several sports.

Clichés are so overused in sports culture that their significance is often lost. They are tossed around so frequently by broadcasters and analysts that, when one actually sees a strong example of a defining characteristic, we assume it to be commonplace and neglect to acknowledge its worth.

A family affair: most people groan at the thought. We all have a cheek-pinching grandma we'd like to avoid or a crazy uncle whose ramblings we'd rather not suffer through. We complain the entire way to the affair, paste on a fake smile throughout the event and praise whatever is good in the world when we finally escape.

I am by no means a newcomer to the Midnight Ramblers' fan base. Ever since Freshman Orientation, I've loved the group's ability to capture its audience with each performance and entertain in a way that far surpasses simply singing.

I have become accustomed to the Ramblers' concerts, where energizing pieces are contrasted with sweet ballads and homemade movie clips, poking fun at blockbuster films and campus conundrums and leaving audiences in fits of laughter.

What is in a name? What is the meaning behind the identity given to us by our parents? These may be questions that many of us ask ourselves at least once in our lives, even if the answer is inconclusive. These are the very questions Gogol Ganguli tries to answer in "The Namesake," a movie based on Jhumpa Lahiri's best-selling novel.

Lungcore: a bizarre fusion of orchestral textures with the gut-punching attack of the heaviest rock bands (think Meshuggah and Mr. Bungle). Enter Lungcore's creator, Jerseyband, seven Eastman alumni who call Brooklyn their home. Jerseyband's unconventional lineup - a trumpet, two tenor saxophones, a baritone sax, drums, a subsonic electric bass and an incendiary guitar is only the beginning of its irreverent twist on instrumental rock.

Reverse Neutral Drive is, as posted on its MySpace Web site, "like a whole wheat pita stuffed with rock, marinated in jazz and melted to perfection in an oven built from the blood, sweat, and tears of six pretty cool musicians." Pioneered by guitarist, pimary songwriter and senior Geoff Bennington and vocalist, lyricist and senior Jed Lubin, the band expanded to six members, including baritone saxophonist and alumnus Brian Conlon, guitarist, drummer and junior Willem Lutter, drummer and junior Dan Kim and keyboard player and sophomore Cristin Stephens.
